Introduction
Wow, can you believe it’s been over three years since COVID-19 completely upended our lives? It feels surreal looking back at the chaos, the uncertainty, and the way the pandemic forced us to re-evaluate what health and wellness actually mean. For me, as an Ayurvedic practitioner, the experience offered a unique lens to understand how our mind-body balance is truly the foundation of resilience. COVID-19 didn’t just bring physical challenges—it tested our mental, emotional, and spiritual resilience too.
During these years, Ayurveda offered powerful tools to help not only myself but also those I guided through their own healing journeys. If you’re still feeling the pandemic aftermath (aren’t we all?), let’s explore the Ayurvedic perspective on how to rebalance and restore vitality. Grab a cozy drink, and let’s dive into what Ayurveda has taught us about healing, grounding, and finding inner peace—even when the world feels chaotic.
Understanding COVID-19 Through the Ayurvedic Lens

Ayurveda views health as a balance between three main energies, or doshas: Vata (air and space), Pitta (fire and water), and Kapha (earth and water). Each dosha governs different bodily functions, emotions, and energy levels. When COVID hit, it disrupted all three doshas in different ways, leaving us feeling scattered, anxious, overheated, sluggish, or a chaotic mix of all three.
• Vata Imbalance: COVID fueled major uncertainty and isolation, amplifying Vata energy and increasing feelings of anxiety, insomnia, and mental instability.
• Pitta Imbalance: Many people experienced frustration, anger, and burnout from work-from-home stress and endless Zoom meetings. That’s classic Pitta overload.
• Kapha Imbalance: The restrictions on movement, binge-watching, and emotional eating amplified Kapha, leading to lethargy, weight gain, and feelings of being “stuck.”
The goal of Ayurveda is to bring these energies back into balance. In the last three years, I’ve leaned heavily on Ayurvedic practices—both for myself and in guiding others—to help manage these doshic imbalances that the pandemic created.
1. Vata Soothing Practices: Grounding During Uncertainty
When everything feels chaotic, Vata energy goes wild. Vata is connected to the air and space elements, and it gets aggravated by constant change, uncertainty, and fear—everything that defined the pandemic. For me, managing my own Vat
a during COVID was essential, and I recommended the same practices to my clients.
My Go-To Vata Balancers:

• Daily Abhyanga (Self-Massage): A warm oil massage with sesame or almond oil became my favorite ritual to ground and calm the nervous system. The simple act of massaging oil into my skin every morning created a moment of peace, grounding, and nourishment.
• Warming, Cooked Foods: Vata thrives on warmth and routine, so I focused on soups, stews, and grounding vegetables. Even when stress spiked, a warm bowl of kitchari (an Ayurvedic detox dish) provided comfort and stability.
• Mindful Breathwork: Slow, deep breathing exercises (like alternate nostril breathing) helped calm my mind and re-center me, even on the most anxiety-filled days.
If COVID made you feel scattered or anxious, these Vata-soothing practices are worth incorporating. They work wonders for bringing stability back into your life.
2. Cooling Pitta: Managing Burnout and Frustration
Working from home, endless Zoom fatigue, and frustration with pandemic restrictions threw Pitta energy completely out of whack. Pitta is linked to fire, which means it’s all about ambition, drive, and focus. But when there’s too much Pitta, it turns into irritation, anger, and burnout.

My Pitta-Calming Practices:
• Cooling Herbal Teas: I added cooling herbs like mint, coriander, and fennel to my daily tea to help tame that inner fire. These herbs are great for cooling the mind and calming emotional heat.
• Daily Meditation: To counteract the mental overdrive, I embraced a daily meditation practice focused on calming my inner fire. Guided meditations or simply sitting in silence with gentle music helped me feel more grounded and less reactive.
• Spending Time in Nature: Ayurveda teaches that nature is one of the best ways to balance Pitta. I made an effort to go outside daily—even if it was just to sit under a tree in the park. The fresh air and green scenery worked wonders for cooling my Pitta energy.
If you felt burnt out or irritable over the last few years, know that these small adjustments can go a long way in balancing Pitta energy. Sometimes, a little fresh air or a cup of cooling tea can make all the difference.
3. Lifting Kapha: Finding Motivation and Breaking Through the Slump
With gyms closed, social gatherings restricted, and life becoming more sedentary, Kapha energy (associated with earth and water) took a hit. When Kapha is out of balance, it can lead to feelings of heaviness, lethargy, and even depression. I noticed this in myself during long stretches of isolation and in my clients who struggled with feeling “stuck.”
My Kapha-Lifting Practices:
• Dynamic Movement: I made a point to incorporate movement into my daily routine—whether it was a short walk, online yoga class, or even dancing around my living room. Moving the body is essential for breaking up stagnant Kapha energy.
• Invigorating Spices: Spices like ginger, black pepper, and cinnamon became my go-tos. They help to ignite digestion and boost energy. Starting my day with a warm cup of ginger tea was an instant pick-me-up.
• Decluttering: Clearing out clutter from my space was surprisingly uplifting. When our environment feels heavy, it can reflect in our minds. I found that a weekly “declutter” of my space did wonders for shifting my mood and motivation.
If you’ve felt sluggish or unmotivated, these Kapha-balancing tips are an easy way to get moving and shake off that heavy energy.
Lessons Learned: Ayurveda as a Lifelong Guide to Wellness
Reflecting on these last three years, it’s clear that the teachings of Ayurveda provided a powerful toolkit for resilience. Here are the biggest lessons I took away:
1. Balance is Everything: Ayurveda taught me that balance isn’t just about what you eat or how much you sleep; it’s about aligning your entire lifestyle to support your mind-body harmony.
2. Self-Care is Non-Negotiable: Through all the highs and lows of the pandemic, Ayurveda reminded me that self-care is an essential part of health. Small rituals—like morning meditation, cooking nourishing foods, or taking a moment to breathe—helped me stay grounded.
3. Connection to Nature is Healing: COVID reminded me how much nature plays a role in our wellness. Even simple moments outside, feeling the sun on my face or listening to birds, helped me find calm and connection when life felt isolated.
